Model Introduction
Yamaha's Waverunner class of personal watercraft (PWC) includes the entry-level VX Series. Among models in the series, the VX and VX Sport have same features, but the hull colors are different: the VX Sport has a black hull and the VX hull is white, and the VX Sport is marketed for consumer purchase while the VX is primarily intended for commercial rental customers. According to Yamaha, the VX Series is the lowest-priced three-person 4-stroke PWC on the market. The VX Deluxe adds dual mirrors, reverse, color and graphics, a cup holder in the glove box, and security: low rpm modes are controlled via key fob. According to Yahama, the VX Deluxe was the best-selling PWC model in the industry last year. Lastly, the VX Cruiser includes all of the listed features, plus a more comfortable, contoured cruiser seat.

Construction

The process, also used in heavy-truck applications, uses metal molds that produce a very consistent hull from boat to boat, which in turn helps ensure a high level of product quality.

The SMC sheet material itself is comprised of polyester resin, fiberglass roving reinforcement, catalysts and filler. It is designed to produces parts that are durable, dent resistant, corrosion-proof, and of reduced weight with a higher strength-to-weight than open-molded fiberglass. The SMC sheet material, which is slightly pliable, is placed in between a set of matched metal die molds, which are heated to 300° F, which makes the SMC material flow evenly into mold cavities, and initiates catalyzation (hardening) during the pressing cycle. One of the advantages of this process, which takes place under great pressure, is that it allows the part (such as the hull), to vary in thickness, depending on how much strength and stiffness is needed and in which location. The substrate can be colored to match the paint that's applied after the part is removed from the mold, which makes nicks and scratches less noticeable. The SMC process results in a high-quality class-A finish, and there are no emissions into the atmosphere as there are with open molding.
