Top 5 Car Rental Companies

Enterprise Enterprise is an international rental car company based in the United States that also serves Canada, Germany, Ireland, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. The car rental company is primarily aimed at the local car rental market, meaning that it is marketed towards local customers who need a replacement car while theirs is being fixed or for those who need to make short trips in the area. Enterprise has also moved into the airport market, with locations in major airports both inside and outside the U.S. Alongside their regular fleet of economy cars, luxury cars, minivans and SUVs, Enterprise also offers customers hybrid vehicles so that they can minimize their impact on the environment. Hertz Hertz is a large international and domestic car rental company. The company’s history dates back to 1918 when Walter L Jacobs started it in Chicago with fleet of Model T Fords. Then in 1923 the company was sold to John D. Hertz, the namesake of the business. Though its current fleet consists of several car brands, Hertz has had a long-standing relationship with ford and even asked Carroll Shelby to design a version of his Ford Mustang specifically for them. This resulted in the GT350H, collector’s cars today that were used as rentals at the time and were eventually sold off. Hertz also developed a GPS system for many of its cars in the 1990s known as the Hertz Neverlost. These systems came to be the Magellan Roadmates, which are now sold in retail stores. Avis Avis was the first car rental company to establish a location at an airport. The location was actually the rental company’s very first and it was set up at Willow Run Airport in Detroit in 1946 by Warren Avis. Soon after locations were set up in Miami Airport and then in Europe, Canada and Mexico. Then in 1954 Warren Avis sold the company to Richard S. Robie and from then on Avis changed ownership several times over the years. Companies like Lazard Freres, Norton Simon and Wesray Capital Corporation have at one time owned Avis. But no matter how many times Avis changed hands its slogan has stayed the same since 1962—“We Try Harder.” Budget Budget Rent a Car got its name from the company’s commitment early on to have the lowest car rental prices. The name has survived since 1958 when the company was founded by Morris Mirkin and has held on through several changes in ownership. Budget is an international company with locations in the U.S., Africa, Asia, Canada, Central America, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, the Middle East and the Caribbean. The company offers customers programs like Fastbreak, a service that allows customers to forgo paper transactions and make reservations and pick up a car more quickly. They also offer a frequent flyer mile program for those who both fly and rent cars on trips. Alamo Alamo is a car rental company with its aim on the travel market. According to the company themselves, they serve the needs of “airport leisure travelers.” Their locations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific Rim make this service possible. The company began in 1974 with just a few locations in Florida and gained notoriety for its unlimited mileage program that allowed customers to travel without limitations on distance without having to pay extra fees. Another innovation from the company was their Internet booking engine that was launched in 1995, making it the first one in the car rental industry. Then in 2005 they launched another first: the first car rental online check-in system.
